Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Gender equality in politics is a critical aspect of inclusive governance and societal progress. In Nigeria, women remain underrepresented in political spaces, including Bida LGA, Niger State, where cultural norms, stereotypes, and systemic barriers hinder female political participation. Public Relations (PR) plays an instrumental role in advancing gender equality by challenging societal perceptions, advocating for policy changes, and promoting female political engagement.

Through strategic communication campaigns, PR can highlight the contributions of women leaders, address biases, and mobilize community support for gender-inclusive politics. Recent studies emphasize the transformative potential of PR in breaking gender barriers in political spaces (Okeke & Yusuf, 2024). This study examines how PR initiatives can promote gender equality in politics within Bida LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to promote gender equality, women in Bida LGA face significant obstacles to political participation, including cultural resistance and limited public support. PR strategies aimed at addressing these barriers are either absent or inadequately implemented, leaving a gap in gender advocacy. This study seeks to explore the role of PR in advancing gender equality in politics within Bida LGA.
